Curbside Pickup

Our curbside pickup service allows for pickup of items at Main Library by appointment only. The curbside pickup location is on the Michigan Street side of the library, in front of the garage doors. Please do not pull onto the apron in front of the doors when arriving for your pickup time. 

Materials already held, or have been placed on hold during this closure will be available for pick up. Please call to make an appointment. If you don't have any items held, you may request up to 10 items for pickup. Patrons looking for reading suggestions will be provided with five “recommended reads.”

Book returns and book donations will not be accepted at this time.

We need your help! Please give us a call (218-730-4200) to cancel any held items you no longer want or need. Starting June 1, all currently held items will be held for ten business days. If they are not picked up within ten days the items will go to the next person in line or back on the shelf. Thank you!


Curbside Scheduling

Our library is short-staffed and experiencing very high call volume for curbside pickup scheduling. We have dedicated staff for scheduling who need to communicate with you about your holds and to set up an appointment. Curbside FAQ

How do I place holds?

Request materials by using the online catalog, or by calling 218-730-4200 between 10 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. 

Can you look for specific items or provide reading suggestions?

Yes! Give us a call at 218-730-4200 for specific holds or reading suggestions.  

How will I know my hold items are ready for pickup?

You will receive an email or phone notification, based on the preference selected in your account. At that time you will call to schedule a pickup appointment. We are not sending mail notifications. Please update your account online with a current email address, as this is the preferred method of hold notification at this time.

To support social distancing efforts, we are offering curbside pickup only and are operating with very limited staff. Staff will fill your holds placed online as quickly as possible; however, some materials requested may not be available, and wait times may be longer than usual. Thank you for your patience.

Can I still check out the materials I have on hold at one of the branches?

If you have items currently held for you at a branch and you would like to schedule a time for curbside pickup at the Main Library, please call 218-730-4200. 

How many items can I check out?

You can check out up to 10 items at this time.

Can I schedule simultaneous pick-ups for multiple accounts that all live in the same household?

Yes, you can check out 10 items per library card and pick them all up with one appointment time.

Do I need a library card?

Yes, patrons must hold a valid library card to use curbside pickup. A total of 10 items may be checked out during curbside pickup. Temporary e-access cards can be used to check out up to 5 items. Apply for an e-access card here.

What if I have mobility issues and cannot leave my vehicle?

If you have mobility issues, we can provide accommodation such as placing bagged items on the hood or in the trunk of your vehicle. Please request this when you call. 

What if I don’t drive or will be walking to the library?

A walk-up area will be designated on the Michigan Street side of the library. Please mention this when you schedule your pick up.

What materials are available for pickup?

All physical materials currently on the shelf are available, including books, audiobooks, Sound Media Players, DVDs, etc. Please note: MnLink/Interlibrary Loans are not accepting new requests for Interlibrary Loan material except for journal articles. Material that already has been received at the Library prior to the shutdown will be available for curbside pickup.

What if I have more than 10 holds on my account already? How do I let you know which materials I would like to request?

In your online library account, you have the ability to suspend your holds and have them reactivated at a later date of your choosing. Or, call 218-730-4200 and speak to a staff member between 10 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. 

What if I have replacement fees, overdue items, or I’m over the checkout limit?

Library staff can override fee restrictions and checkout limits. If you would like to pay your fees, our online payment system is still available.

Will you add curbside pickup at the branches?

The Main Library is the only location we are offering curbside pickup at this time.

How do I return materials?

Book returns remain closed and no items are due at this time. Please do not attempt to return items or donate any books using the book drops at any library location.

What happens if I miss my curbside pickup appointment?

After your missed appointment, we will hold your items for 3 business days. Please contact us to reschedule an appointment time. After three days, if no appointment is rescheduled, your materials will be checked in.

What are you doing to protect the safety of patrons and library staff?

The contactless curbside pickup model has been approved by the City of Duluth Safety and Training Officer. This model provides maximum social distancing for the safety of our patrons and our staff. Staff will use cloth face coverings in accordance with City of Duluth workplace safety policy and CDC guidelines.

Patrons and staff should not approach one another and should respect the need for social distancing. This may feel uncomfortable but is necessary to provide a safe, contactless pickup service. Please remain in your vehicle until the previous patron has departed.

Are the books sanitized?

The items you requested have been sitting on the shelf for weeks and have not been touched during that time. The CDC says that the virus can live on cardboard and paper for 24 hours. It can live on plastic for 2-3 days. The amount of time these items have sat is more than sufficient to kill the virus. When our staff retrieved these items for pickup they followed best practices for sanitation. If you are concerned, you may choose to let your materials sit for up to three days before accessing them.
